Orientation to the Liver Transplant Evaluation Process

This class invites patient’s and their families/ caregivers to attend a one-hour orientation to the liver transplant evaluation process. Patient’s will be scheduled for one of these classes during their initial evaluation. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. There will also be time for questions and answers during and after the class. Topics will include:
- Learning about your liver and cirrhosis
- Pre-transplant testing and evaluation
- Members of the transplant team
- How to get on the transplant list
- The MELD Score (scoring system for liver allocation)
- What to do in case of an emergency
- Nutrition and liver disease
- Medications that may be harmful
- Lifestyle changes/ exercise and activities/ stress reduction
- The liver transplant surgery
- Going home after the transplant
- Medic Alert bracelets/ advanced directives
- Financial aspect of transplantation
- Social services
- Hospital tour
