Nearby Lodging / Travel

Patients who are undergoing treatment may have to remain close to the hospital because of special medical care needs. Some patients who live more than 65 miles from USC University Hospital may have to take up temporary residence in this area. The social worker will be able to assist you in finding a place to live in the Los Angeles area. If you are accepted to the program, please discuss your housing needs as early as possible. Many treatment centers have short-term housing possibilities or discount arrangements with nearby motels and hotels.

The extra expenses of treatment or substantial loss of family income may make it difficult for families to meet their mortgage or rent payments in a timely manner. To maintain a good credit rating, it is important to communicate with creditors or landlords to discuss your particular situation and to make special arrangements. Family, friends, or church members may provide temporary help if they are made aware of the problem. We encourage patients to discuss their situation with the team social worker who may know of special resources.

Assistance with the cost of basic charges for telephone service may be available for recipients of public assistance, such as AFDC, Medicaid, or other programs. Speak with the eligibility worker in your county department of social services or welfare for more information. Families that have difficulty controlling long-distance charges may wish to consider purchase of prepaid calling cards.
